If Your Cricut Is Still in the Box… This One’s for You!

Still haven’t used your Cricut? You’re not alone. Let’s talk about fear, perfectionism, and why starting (even messy) is the only way to fall in love with creating again.

Yesterday I posted a reel showing my new Cricut Maker 4, and my DMs turned into a full-on confession corner. Apparently, half the crafting world has a Cricut that’s still in the box, and some even have two or three! One sweet follower wrote, “Mine’s been sitting in the closet for over a year… I’m intimidated by it.”
And honestly? I get it. Because even as someone who designs for Cricut users every day, I’ve felt that same hesitation before starting something new. That mix of what if I mess it up? and where do I even start?
But here’s the truth no one tells you:
The fear doesn’t go away before you start. It goes away because you start.
1. It’s not your fault you’re scared
Cricut machines look like tiny robots from the future. They beep, they blink, they ask for “materials,” and suddenly we feel like we need an engineering degree to make a mug.
But once you open that box, you’ll realize it’s basically your new creative bestie. She needs a little attention (and maybe a name 😜).
2. Don’t wait to “learn everything first”
I see this all the time with creative women: we want to feel ready before we start. But that “ready” moment never comes.
So instead of watching a hundred YouTube videos, pick one small project.
A label for your coffee jar.
A cute decal for your laptop.
Your name on a tumbler.
Do it, even if it’s crooked. You’ll learn by doing, not by waiting.
3. Make Cricut Design Space your safe zone
You don’t have to design from scratch. The app is full of pre-made designs ready to cut, print, or personalize. You can even upload your own SVGS/PNGs (yes, like mine from Sincerely Barbie 😉).
Start by exploring, not mastering. Click around, try things, make mistakes.
4. Create before you compare
You might follow makers who make jaw-dropping projects on Instagram or TikTok and think, “I’ll never get there.” But guess what? Neither did they, at first.
Every pro crafter started with a crooked cut or vinyl stuck to their fingers. The magic isn’t in perfection, it’s in momentum.
5. Use what you have, not what you wish you had
No need to have every blade, mat, or fancy material right away. Use what came in the box. You can upgrade later. The most expensive supply you’ll ever waste is unused potential.
Once you get past that first project, something shifts. Suddenly, your Cricut isn’t this intimidating robot, it’s your creative partner. You start thinking, “What else can I make?” Labels for your pantry, stickers for your planner, gifts for your friends… and maybe even products for your first Etsy shop.
That’s where freedom starts, in that moment of trying, experimenting, laughing at your “fails,” and realizing you’re actually capable of more than you thought.
So, if your Cricut is still in the box, maybe today’s the day you finally unwrap it.
Make yourself a coffee or tea, put on your favorite playlist, and just start. One cut. One project. One brave moment.
Thanks for sharing this cozy coffee moment with me ☕
If you’re ready to take that next step, read my post “How I’d Start a Handmade Business Today" it’s the perfect follow-up for new makers who want to turn their crafts into something bigger.
And just in case you don’t have a Cricut yet but feel inspired after reading this, you can check out the exact one I use — the Cricut Maker 4 — on my Amazon Storefront. She’s pink, beautiful, and officially my new crafting bestie. 💖
